Quick File Rename allows you to rename Canon RAW (CR2) files using information such as image serial number, firmware version, owner name, make, model, date time and image width and height.
Using Canon RAW (CR2) meta data will give your photos unique file names. The information is extracted using Quick File Rename and inserted into the names of your files. For example, if you have taken a photo of the statue of liberty, Quick File Rename can automatically extract the Canon RAW image serial number and make this part of the file name, automatically. The benefit of this means that you will always have unique file names as part of your workflow. Quick File Rename does this seamlessly through its user friendly user interface and powerful command line rename and scheduling rename tools. |

Step one
The first step to RAW renaming is to make sure there is RAW information within your photos. If you use a Canon EOS camera, or an SLR equivalent, chances are there is RAW information embedded. At this point in time Quick File Rename only supports Canon RAW (CR2) format as well as Exif formats. The RAW and Exif information is inserted by your camera automatically.
The following screenshot shows a Canon CR2 image with some of its meta data information visible. You can verify that an image has meta data information using an Exif viewer. For Canon RAW information, you can use a tool which recognises RAW information such as ExifTool. In this example we will use the image serial number to insert unique names into our files. |
This photo has the image number 1010523 as part of its RAW information |
If you do not know if your photos have meta data information, Quick File Rename can automatically do this for you. Photos which do not have the RAW information will not be renamed.

Step two
The second step is deciding what information you wish to insert into the name of the file. As mentioned earlier we'll be inserting the image serial number as part of this tutorial but you can also insert other information such as firmware version, owner name, make, model, date time and image width and height. |
Quick File Rename supports inserting the image number, serial number, owner, firmware and more |
In our example, we want to insert the place of interest, as well as the country. We want our photos to be in the format of "<imageNumber> Photo Shoot" e.g. "1010523 Photo Shoot". |
|
Step three
Now that we've decided what attributes we want to insert, we first clear the existing names by going to the Remove tab and adding the Make title empty Rule.
Next, we goto the Insert tab and add the following text which contains the tags we want.
<exif.canon.imagenumber> Photo Shoot
then we add the position based insert Rule. |
Adding our Rules in Quick File Rename |
As soon as you add the image number related rule, Quick File Rename will extract the information from the image and insert the image number according to the rule format that you specify. |
Step four
Now we preview our before and after changes.
The Preview window will be updated to show before and after rename. |
|
The after rename column shows what the new file names will be. Pretty nifty eh?
To rename, simply press the Rename button. |
