What is it?

The Audio Connection is a multimedia audio sampler that I did as a project for the subject "Design for User Interaction". We had to do a re-design of an entire application with a bad interface. Basically, we were provided the content and told to make it a better design. I scored pretty well for my re-design considering we only had a 2 week dateline.

The downloadable version is a highly stripped down version featuring fewer audio samples as the original one would be pretty big, around 9mb.

How it works

The program has a linear structure, with some form of interactivity, ie buttons to jump back and forth the pages. Animation was done via an internal scripting engine. (Lingo scripts) Basically how this program was made, was that elements (sound, pictures, etc) were assembled together (by me) while the actual internal mechanism does all the playing of sounds, displaying of images, and so on and so forth.

The program works as a Information provider, while the user takes the position of an information seeker, which makes Director suited for this kind of application. Director is similar to Authorware in that it is relatively high level, more of Visual programming, but Director is more powerful as it allows more control via Lingo scripts. I don't like Director very much though.

How it was implemented

Software used:

  • Director
  • Adobe Photoshop 5.0
  • Windows 9X/NT

I re-used the text content as well as some sound files, and re-designed all buttons and images using Photoshop. MIDI music was obtained from a royalty free media files CDROM. Director was used to put it all together, and testing / debugging was done on the Win9X/NT platform.
